Fon was founded in Madrid in 2006 by Argentine-Spanish entrepreneur Martín Varsavsky to build a global crowdsourced WiFi network where users share home broadband in exchange for roaming access to other Fon hotspots. The company attracted investment from Google and Skype and partnered with major ISPs worldwide, growing to millions of hotspots. As carrier partnerships wound down, Fon was acquired by Agile Content in 2021.
